This is a 1943 German Youth Festival pin made of stamped metal. The pin is heavily tarnished but otherwise in just about perfect condition.

This is the 1935 Deutsches Jungendfest tinnie for the German Youth Festival of 1935 was produced by a great many different manufacturers, and the process of controlling the quality of production of such things was obviously not firmly in place at the time of production of this badge. I believe that there are four major variations of this badge. If you click on the Image above you can see the major variations.

HJ German Youth Festival 1935, Type 4

Type 4 HJ 1935 German Youth Festival tinnie.

This badge is what I have called a Type 4 badge.

The HJ issued four different types of proficiency badges. Each was issued as a full size badge (about 2 inches high) and as a miniature (about 3/4 of an inch high). There were cloth versions of all 4 badges as well. The DJ version (shaped like the DJ rune) was issued to HJ members 12 to 14 years old. The other three versions were all for HJ members and had the same basic appearance (large circle over the T rune). The iron (for 15 year olds) was black, the bronze (for 16 year olds) was bronze or copper colored, and the silver (for 17 and 18 year olds) was silver. Over the years, as the badges age and tarnish, it is not always easy to tell the different versions apart.

I believe this one is iron. On the back, in addition to the RZM markings, you can see that the left side of the top of the arrow or rune has been scraped away. That is the place where a serial number was once located. That serial number would have been recorded on various HJ documents and could have (with more luck than most people are likely to have) been traced to the original owner of the badge.

This is a miniature HJ proficiency badge in bronze. This is an excellent quality original badge with distinct bronze coloring. However it has been repaired on the back (the pin was re-attached) using something that looks like green epoxy, so it is bargain priced.

I believe this one is silver.

The HJ gave out many different types of pieces to encourage contributions to the Winter Help effort. One of the most interesting sets were of HJ field equipment. This set was issued in both plastic and glass. The glass set included: Canteen, Mess Kit, Backpack, Trumpet with DJ Rune Banner, Bread Bag, Drum and Knife. The plastic set included the same pieces plus a plastic air rifle.
